Northeast Laboratories' Modified ASTMF 312 Method

  • Microscopic Particle Count: It is well documented that varnish is a thin insoluble contaminant comprised of oil degradation by-products and sometimes depleted additive molecules.
  • Northeast Laboratories' modified ASTM F 312 method for Microscopic Particle Counting, Particle Sizing and Particle Identification, extends the analytical range of varnish detection down to less than 1 micron.
  • Because these "soft contaminants" are less than 1 micron in size, microscopic particle counting is used as a tool to trend particles in the microscopic size ranges and alert of potential varnish anomalies.
  • With this technique we physically count particles with a high intensity microscope and monitor the submicron ranges for increases in levels.
  • This means that we are able to detect varnish forming particles sooner.
